BE PREPARED AHEAD OF TIME FOR JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY—WHAT YOU NEED

You are facing hip or knee joint replacement surgery!  It won’t be difficult if you are prepared. Having had 2, I can tell you it is important to be prepared around the house ahead of time.  Here is what you need to think about and have on hand.

  • Someone to help you and drive for the first 1-2 weeks
  • A bed low enough to get in and out of so your feet touch the floor
  • Avoid stairs
  • Walker, crutches, and cane
  • Several bags of peas – frozen – you will need to ice, ice, ice
  • Compression socks – you can get them at Amazon
  • Non-slip bath mats outside of shower
  • Pick up all loose rugs that could cause a fall
  • A reacher
  • Elastic pants – they are a life saver when getting dressed
  • Slip on rubber sole shoes — no ties
  • Grab bars in the shower – you can get suction cup ones on Amazon
  • Shower chair
  • Long shoe horn
  • Chair with arms to sit in
  • Food tray
  • High toilet seat/commode chair – really helps
  • Long handled sponge
  • Food – frozen easy meals to heat up or have food delivered for the first 2 weeks
  • Put necessities within reach – no bending
  • Night lights
  • Phone within reach
  • Have an emergency number on hand
  • Things to keep you busy while recovering – books, games
